Many Canadians pay a visit to their dentist at least once per year as part of regular check ups.  Prior to beginning the check up, if it is your first appointment the dentist will discuss your dental and medical history; however if it’s not the first appointment, the dentist will ask you if you’ve had any recent changes in your health and medication.  It is very important that your dentist is made aware of all of your health information in order to avoid medical complications and drug reactions. Once the information is discussed, treatment begins by giving the teeth and gums a thorough cleaning.  The cleaning begins by clearing plaque and tartar that has accumulated on the teeth.  Once that is complete then the teeth are polished, which will get rid of any excess debris that could’ve been left over and bring smoothness and shine to the surface. It is difficult to attract tarter and calculus/plaque on a smooth surface.

Once the cleaning is completed, the dentist will examine all teeth and gums and rule out any swellings, mouth sores or redness; including ruling out any gum disease if absent.  While examining dentist may take a few intra-oral x-rays to make sure there is no dental decay inside the tooth surface or between the teeth .  The advancement of x-rays with absolutely low dosage has make them an excellent diagnostic tool in the modern dentistry. After the detailed examination is completed, the dentist will advise you of any issues that were found and recommends treatment that is most appropriate. Priority must be given to the treatment that is essential first.
