Emergency Wisdom Teeth Extraction & Removal

The wisdom teeth are found in the back of the mouth. They are the last set of teeth to emerge, usually in late adolescence. Wisdom teeth are also known as third molars. Wisdom teeth that have become impacted are either horizontally aligned or angled. As a result, they erupt misaligned. They can press against the neighboring teeth or their roots, causing pain, infection and possible tooth movement.

The general removal of wisdom teeth is not considered a dental emergency. However, if one or more of your wisdom teeth are impacted, you may experience extreme pain and discomfort. In this circumstance, an emergency wisdom tooth extraction may be required by a dentist or oral surgeon.

Wisdom teeth that have been impacted can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms, including:

  1. Gums that are swollen and uncomfortable. You may also notice bleeding or puss secretion (infection) at the site.
  2. Toothaches: A deep cavity or decay can lead to toothaches. Pain upon chewing may also be noticed. This pain can also radiate to the head and neck.
  3. Teeth sensitive to hot and cold
  4. Tooth shifting or movement
  5. Jaw ache or jaw stiffness/soreness

Partially erupted teeth can often lead to Pericoronitis. This is when the gum (covering the tooth) traps food and plaque debris. It causes inflammation and excruciating pain, and it may require antibiotics prior to an extraction.

In some cases, wisdom teeth will need to be extracted via oral surgery. Based on a panoramic or 3D X-ray obtained, your dental healthcare provider should be able to tell you whether you will have problems with your wisdom teeth.

What to expect at an emergency wisdom tooth extraction in Brampton?

You may require emergency wisdom tooth extraction if you are suffering from any of the symptoms of impacted wisdom teeth. The oral surgeon will need to perform a surgical extraction rather than a routine extraction. Following are some of the steps that are involved in an emergency wisdom teeth removal.

  1. A local anesthetic (a numbing agent) will be applied to the treatment area around your tooth by the doctor. The entire area surrounding the tooth will be entirely numb so that you won’t feel any pain.
  2. If the extraction is a difficult one, or all four wisdom teeth require extraction at one time then general anesthesia (intravenous) is used.
  3. Specialized instruments are used to widen the tooth socket.
  4. The necessary pressure is applied to pull the tooth from its place.
  5. Sutures are then placed to close the wound.
  6. Post-procedural instructions must be followed as recommended.
