Fixed Dentures: A New in Dentistry

Fixed Dentures

A few years ago, while walking through a children’s fair in the Chingacousy Park with my two young daughters, I bumped into an old, elderly patient. She came running to me along with her grandchildren and family and started praising the dentures I fitted her couple of years back. She revealed, “Dr. Sharma, I can enjoy chewing on all the foods, even the roasted chick peas. Thank you for the great dentures you had provided me”. I was elated and happy for such a praise, who would not be, especially in front of my two proud daughters? But, in my mind, I was whispering, “God, I wish, each and every one who depends on dentures for their daily routine should get similar results”.

Many times, no matter how good the dentures are made, they are not good enough. There are various reasons for a denture that does not fit or sit nicely. Due to great efforts of both doctor and patients along with the expenses incurred, one expects that the dentures should be better than what they came out to be. The system, processes and expertise are ditto to create each and every denture we build but, due to the difference in the facial anatomy the end results after placement in the mouth occasionally fluctuate. I would not want to go further in details for such reasons as they are too many, complex and scientific. As dentists, our utmost objective is to resolve the issues of chewing and help improve ones ability to enjoy all kinds of foods in a natural setting.

Lower denture is mostly the culprit of ill fits. Researchers are continuously devising the ways to establish means to stabilize the lower denture. During the last few years the success has resulted due to the advent of dental implants. Dentures supported by them resemble natural teeth in looks and feel splendid. Yes of course, they do not come out, when one laughs, neither they wobbles when visiting friends on a feast. These types of dentures are called Implant Supported Dentures. Implant supported dentures are the closest to natural teeth and second only to a very expensive full mouth re-construction.

What are implants supported dentures?

An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that is supported by and attached to implants. An implant-supported overdenture is attached to implants, while a regular denture rests on the gums, is not supported by implants, and tends to fit less firmly in the mouth. An implant-supported denture is used when a person doesn’t have any teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone in the jaw to support implants. An implant-supported denture has special attachments that snap onto attachments on the implants. Implant-supported dentures usually are made for the lower jaw because regular dentures tend to be less stable there. Usually, a regular denture made to fit an upper jaw is quite stable on its own and doesn’t need the extra support offered by implants. However, you can receive an implant-supported denture in either the upper or lower jaw. You can remove an implant-supported denture easily. Some people prefer to have fixed (permanent) crown and bridgework in their mouths that can’t be removed. Your dentist will consider your particular needs and preferences when suggesting fixed or removable options.
