Question: If I have braces do I need dental checkups every six months?

Answer:  The length of time that each patient wears braces varies depending on the severity of the problem and the type of treatment that they receive.  Treatments can take anywhere from 6 months to 30 months, generally a patient will wear braces for 20 months.

During this time, you have to maintain the up most cleanliness & perfect oral hygiene in order to keep teeth looking great even while wearing braces.  With braces, you should brush your teeth up to 3 times a day; this will remove any excess food that is stuck between the braces.  Daily flossing will also prevent food from getting stuck where the toothbrush cannot reach.

You will definitely need to get dental check ups every six months while having braces; it is actually even more important to do so during this time.  Due to the braces, food can get stuck where neither the toothbrush nor the floss can reach.  This can cause bacteria to enter the tooth, which in turn can cause cavities, gingivitis & gum disease.
