What are dental implants?

Dental implants are screws, and they consist of two parts: the implant, which acts as a root, and the crown, which sits on top of it and performs the same functions as a natural tooth. Dental implants are biocompatible replacements for missing teeth that are surgically inserted into the jawbone.

Dental implants can be either endosteal or sub-periosteal. The endosteal implant is surgically anchored in the jawbone, whereas the sub-periosteal implant is placed on the bone but beneath the gingiva.

Procedure

Dental implant installation is a surgical process that requires the use of modern surgical skills and effective surgical instruments. A licensed dental expert will do a full clinical and radiographic exam after taking a complete dental and medical history. Following that, a diagnosis and treatment plan is devised.

This can be a single or two-stage surgery. The screw and abutment are implanted at the same appointment with a single-step procedure, however with a two-step technique, the screw is inserted in the jawbone first and then left to heal for five to six months. An abutment and crown are then placed on top of the screw after it has healed and fully merged with the bone. For both single or two-stage, the treatment is done under local or general anesthesia.

Benefits of Dental Implants

The use of dental implants to replace missing or non-functional teeth has many advantages. The aesthetics of dental implants are worth noting since they have a more natural appearance. The most significant advantage is that they improve chewing function. They also help with speech and word pronunciation. Implants also contribute to the restoration of self-esteem as well as the enhancement of overall oral health.

Cost of dental implants

The cost of a tooth implant will vary with a patient’s needs, the width of the jawbone, and also the dental clinic. Generally, average tooth implant surgical only portion costs in Brampton starts  around $1,000 per tooth. Surgical cost may increase if one needs grafting of the bone to prepare a strong implant base. Additional cost may range from $1,750-3,000, depending upon the clinical components and lab work needed. Some of these components are titanium based abutments with porcelain teeth. The final sum of the cost may vary as additional dental treatments may be required (crowns, teeth cleaning, checkups, etc.). In most cases, the average implant cost will be about $3,000 to $3,500 without bone graft. Some insurance plans do provide coverage for dental implants. Grafting of the bone structure is usually covered by employer provided insurance. One must speak with their insurance company prior to booking. Our office generally provides free initial consultation, if no x-rays are needed.

FAQ’s

  1. What is the success rate of dental implants?
This varies with habits and health and from individual to individual. Dental implants are reported to be 90-95% successful for healthy individuals with good oral hygiene.
  1. How long does the implants last?
Dental implants do not decay like natural teeth, which is a great advantage. The gum and bone that support the implant need to remain healthy, so regular checkups, professional cleanings, and great home care can increase the longevity of the implant. With proper care and maintenance, they can last a lifetime.
