What is a dental cleaning?

Cost of teeth cleaning

Dentists and dental hygienists provide and perform a basic preventative procedure called dental cleaning. Dental cleanings regularly keep your teeth and gums healthy and stable. Often, when we do not brush our teeth thoroughly, bacteria and food debris combine to form plaque. Plaque is soft and can be removed easily with proper brushing. However, if the plaque is not removed or left undisturbed, it will crystalize and form a solid mass known as tartar. Tartar is the hard form and it cannot be removed with brushing. Rather, it requires professional cleaning. Dentists and dental hygienists take great care to be gentle during your cleanings.

Plaque and tartar cause inflammation in the gums and lead to soreness, pain, and bleeding upon brushing. Plaque can also be a huge risk to develop cavities and bad breath.

Procedure:

Your dentist and dental hygienist will first make sure to perform a thorough clinical and radiographical examination. Based on the clinical and radiographical examinations, a treatment and care plan is devised. If you have not had a dental cleaning in a long time, your gums may be sensitive. If this is the case, an anesthetic gel or local anesthesia is used to make your procedure more comfortable.

Hand and power-driven instruments such as scalers and ultrasonic can also be used to remove the plaque and tartar from the gums and beneath the gums as well. It might take an hour or multiple visits for a dental cleaning. It depends on the amount of tartar and type of cleaning you require (regular cleaning, deep cleaning, or periodontal cleaning).

Post-procedure, mild soreness can be felt, and it will relieve after few days. Over-the-counter medications can be used in case of severe pain or consult your dentist or dental hygienist.

How much does it cost to clean teeth?

Depending on the type of cleaning required the cost of teeth cleaning in Brampton can vary. A regular cleaning may start at a minimum of $75. Additional costs may be required for x rays. A deep cleaning or periodontal cleaning is much deeper and comprehensive may start at $100 per quadrant (the mouth is divided into four quadrants: upper right/left and lower right/left). Additional costs may apply for anesthetic (a numbing agent) where required.

Note: The prices mentioned above are not absolute and may vary from clinic to clinic. Different dental insurance plans may cover dental treatments including teeth cleaning. It also gives you the option of coverage you need and how much you want to spend on it.
